Global citizenship is about the understanding of different cultures, values and religions and having the belief that we can make a difference to the injustice and inequality in our world. The importance of Global citizenship is a key part of the school curriculum and in response to that we have added this section to our website.

Through our website children and young adults in Kenya and the UK will gain an understanding of the similarities and differences in our cultures and values. We can help in forging links between schools and encourage a common goal of helping others through the creation of opportunity and social enterprise.

Involvement

We want to encourage you to Step-up for Kenya and raise awareness of the Johari Foundation and the children on our Miale social development programmes. By encouraging your school's participation with the Foundation we hope that you will support our school fundraising initiatives or get creative and suggest your own fundraising ideas. Our philosophy is Empowerment through Opportunity and this applies not only to the children in Miale but to children in Kenya and the UK working with Johari Foundation to support the Miale Programmes. We can all work towards making a positive impact on the lives of children.

Fundraising News

Kinghorn Primary Christmas Fair

In December Kinghorn Primary School in Fife braved the wild winter weather to host their annual Christmas Fair. The children were creative and enterprising and made all of the products themselves. The money they raised through the sale of these items was distributed between the school and Johari Foundation. In February during a school assembly the children presented a cheque to Johari Foundation of £270. This is a fantastic contribution made all the more special as the children had taken the time to make all of the items that were sold on the day.

Sale of toys raises funds for Miale Programmes

The Primary 3 class of St Joseph's RC Primary School in Inverness held a toy sale in November to raise funds for the Johari Foundation. They brought in toys that they had grown out of or no longer wanted, priced them and sold them to other pupils in the school. The children organised the event all by themselves after their teacher encouraged them to think of fundraising ideas that would help to raise funds for the Johari Foundation's Miale Programmes. The children raised £125 through the sale of the toys which will help towards paying for school fees, equipment, basic toiletries and food. We are looking forward to working with the children of St Joseph's RC Primary in the future.

Bo'ness primary schools are the first to Step up for Kenya through involvement in the Mount Kenya Challenge! Grange, Blackness, Bo'ness Public and Deanburn schools participated in the event during their Big Fit Walks in June. Between them they raised a fantastic £1,527 to help support children on the Miale programmes. We look forward to catching up with the schools after the summer to let them know how the money they raised is helping to benefit the Miale children. Click here to find out more.

Top Fundraiser

Benjamin_Certificate.JPG

Benjamin is the top fundraiser from Bo'ness who took part in the 'Step up for Kenya' challenge in June 2010. Benjamin, a pupil at Grange Primary was encouraged to fundraise after hearing about the children on the Miale Programmes. He wanted to help them to go to school and to buy their school uniforms. Benjamin enlisted the support of his parents who took his sponsor form to work. We at Johari Foundation are delighted with Benjamin's efforts.
