Case study - Anne Wanja

Anne Wanja is a 9 year old girl living with her family in Kianda, Kibera. She is the eldest child in the family and has a sister of 7 and a brother of 2. Anne is a very hard working and friendly girl. She is very good at poetry and drama.

Background

Her father Omari (30 years) was shot during the post election violence and has a bullet lodged in his spinal cord. He is confined to a wheel chair and lost his job because he is unable to walk. He spends most of his time sleeping and has been affected psychologically. He feels very bad because he is not able to play his role as a father by providing food, water, clothes etc. He is dependent on his wife to help him around the house

Through the help of the Head teacher at Ayany primary school, the Johari Foundation was able to identify Anne as needing help and we have supported her family since 2008

The programme has provided the family with:-

  • Food – vegetables, beans, porridge flour, fruits and bread on a weekly basis.
  • Monthly budget – ugali flour, sugar, soap, rice, cooking oil, paraffin, shoe polish and tea-leaves.
  • Uniform and shoes every year
  • Payment of tuition, exams and lunch in school
  • Holiday club
  • Psycho social support
  • Anne says:

“Before Miale sponsored me, I used to be sent home to get school fees. Miale has given me books, socks, uniform, sweater, shoes and shorts. Miale has also given my family food to eat. I thank Miale for everything it has done for me and I hope God will continue to give Miale the good heart to help others like me to have a chance to go to school without being sent home for anything. I pray for my teachers and friends God bless you for taking care of me and my family. Your programme is good I love you. It has helped me academically and it has improved me very much. My sponsor is a good person; the world needs many people like you.”
