Posted by Melanie van de Velde. All of us have that scary potential to be evil. And then people can totally blow you away by their warmth, love and strength. Funny creatures we are.
It is so tragic to see what the recent situation in Kenya brought out in a very small minority of people. And this doesnt just only happen in Africa, we have seen many worse things happen in our own cultures. Last week I was in the Anne Frank house watching images of one of the camps just after the second world war. It is just impossible to grasp what people can do to each other. So scary.
No excuse for any violence in my mind but that is easy to say. How lucky are most of us to have no idea how we would feel and react to extreme situations like living in extreme poverty dealing with sickness and death of so many children and young people, and so much unfairness and injustice.
Thankfully there is also so much wonderful stuff happening. The positive spirit and warmth of all the people I met in Kenya has been such an amazing experience. It is great to see that there are so many amazing initiatives by a huge number of Kenyans to unite and support each other and drive the country forward even more than before.
A group of 40 Kenyan pop artists have come together and written the single 'Wakenya Pamoja: Keeping Hope Alive'' and are performing several concerts to pursue peace and reconciliation. Check out this link on U-tube: Wakenya Pamoja
Then there are for example women who will continue to wear sacs until peace has returned to Kenya, see this article: 'Kenyan woman urged to wear sacs'
There are many good blogs where people give their opinion about the situation. Some links from the BBC site:
'Kenyan bloggers at home and abroad'
'Battle of the blogs in Kenya'
Lots of fantastic stuff in the middle of all the tragic things that have happened recently. Very humbling to see how there are so many people that can turn disasters into opportunities and to keep a focus on the positive no matter what the situation is. Hopefully the people in Kenya will also be an inspiring example in dealing with this situation like they have with so many hard challenges before.
