Miale Community Programmes

Children form up to 70% of Kibera’s population - Africa’s largest slum with an estimated 1 million people. Many face a difficult future with very little opportunity for education and self-development.

Our Miale Community Programs are dedicated to serving the best interests of the children and young adults we support. Miale, which means rays of sunshine in Swahili, is focussed on nurturing each child by working with them at a grass roots level. The following individual programmes comprise the Miale program.

Miale Child Support Program

The Miale Child Support Program (MSP) reaches out to orphans and vulnerable children in Kibera, the largest slum settlement in sub-Saharan Africa. Miale CSP provides foodstuffs, social support and a range of activities through our learning centre and partnerships with local organisations. By giving vulnerable children the resources and support they need to get a good start in life, we encourage their academic and personal development.

Miale Outreach

Miale Outreach is a new programme that supports children in the rural location of Kandara, where some of the farmers we partner with on our Johari Naturals range are located. At the beginning of each month we give the children and their guardians a supply of various food and homewares such as maize, beans, cooking oil and toothpaste. As with Miale CSP, we actively support the children’s personal development through mentoring and access to economic opportunity.

Miale Scholarships

Miale Scholarships are for secondary and tertiary education and are offered to children from the Miale CSP and Outreach programmes. Children learn about this opportunity from their primary years and are selected for scholarship sponsorship according to their academic performance and personal ambition. Secondary education is not always the best option, so we try to understand each child’s individual strengths and interests – where appropriate, we will support them in a vocational training course or apprenticeship.
